Mortar Granules – practical, slipresistant finishes for apartments, villas, and large Gulf projects
Mortar granules are a highly practical finishing solution because they combine a decorative textured appearance with strong slip resistance and durability under daily use. They are widely used in residential units as well as in hightraffic commercial and public developments across the Gulf. Within Nilekw’s portfolio, mortar granules are often used alongside other decorative aggregates in the marble & mortar granules systems.
What mortar granules are and how they are produced
Mortar granules are mineral or natural aggregates—such as selected sands, granite chips, or modified fillers—that are crushed and graded into defined grain sizes according to the required surface texture. They can be used in their natural shades or combined with pigmented mortars to create finishes that match façade colours or interior design schemes. The granules may be mixed into the mortar or broadcast onto the fresh surface and then embedded, forming a cohesive top layer with a visible, durable texture that improves slip resistance and wear performance.
Use in apartments and villas
- Textured decorative walls in reception and living spaces (e.g. behind the TV or at the entrance) as a more expressive alternative to smooth paint.
- Balcony floors and small entrance zones that require a slightly rough, safer surface where dust, rainwater, or wet shoes are common.
- Laundry rooms, storage rooms, and service areas that need robust, easytomaintain finishes which hide minor marks better than plain coatings.
- Exterior façades with sandy or stonelike textures that strengthen the architectural identity and improve resistance to microcracking and weathering.
- Garden paths, pool surrounds, and outdoor shower zones where extra grip and a natural, landscapefriendly look are required.
- External stairs, entrance steps, and ramps used by people and vehicles, providing longlasting, slipresistant surfaces under intensive use.
Use in residential buildings and public projects
In multistorey residential buildings, mortargranule finishes offer a costeffective, durable solution in common areas:
- Staircases and landings, where textured mortar improves safety and abrasion resistance compared with smooth screeds.
- Main entrance halls and routes to elevators, where light texture helps hide dust and wear while withstanding frequent washing.
- Rooftops and shared terraces, as part of outdoor flooring systems that must handle sun, rain, and regular use by residents.
Colours and design flexibility
Mortargranule finishes can be produced in natural beige, sand, grey, and earthy tones or within coloured mortars tuned to the project’s palette. Different grain sizes allow precise control over surface roughness: finer textures suit interior walls and living areas, while coarser textures are ideal for exterior walks, stairs, and wet zones. The resulting surfaces show subtle shadows and tonal variation, helping to disguise dust, small scratches, and minor imperfections—an advantage in both residential and hightraffic public projects in the Gulf.
